Not long ago, an agent called me and said, “you know, I like all the ways you show how to build your network, but you want to know what really worked for me?”  Naturally I was intrigued so I asked her to tell me. 


She said, “I decided I was going to build a network over 500 people in my first year.  But I realized that often I get distracted during the day, and don’t take advantage of all the people I meet; my dry cleaner, banker, dentist…there’s so many in just a single day.  So I have several areas where I place reminder notes.  They just say “network.”  That way, I’m constantly aware that everyone I meet or do business with should be in my network.” 


“Then, I created a goal to add just 3 names…3 people each day to my network.  If I do this just 5 days a week (weekends are a bonus if I add anyone), I will meet my goals in about 9 months.  Instead of asking everyone if they want to save money on taxes and increase their retirement income, I ask them if they want to receive my monthly  client newsletter updates on all kinds of topics: special reports, etc.  Notice something?  I’m not selling them anything! Just building my network.” 


“Do you know what happened?  She asked.  “I met my goal of 500 people in ten months.  But that’s not the best part.  By simply asking people whom I meet, I sold 9 policies in the process.  I’m still building my network.  And I’m still getting paid to do it.  This is my secret to success. 


Notice the difference here between cold calling and network building?  Network building is simply building relationships by bringing something valuable and welcome to the party.  You’re not trying to sell anything.  But in the process, you will get business.  And when you start a regular marketing campaigning with your network, you will quickly begin to see a consistency of business coming to you.
